Not every beer story begins according to plan.
False Start certainly didn’t.
A compressor malfunction left this pale ale fermenting at ambient temperature instead of under the conditions originally intended.
At that point, there were really only two possibilities: we’d lost a batch of beer, or we’d accidentally created something worth drinking.
Fortunately, the beer had other plans.
Against the odds, False Start emerged as a hazy, sessionable pale ale — and one we may never be able to repeat exactly the same way again.
Sometimes you just have to see where the wrong turn takes you.
Meet the Beer
False Start Pale Ale
False Start began with Australian Ella and Galaxy hops and a plan.
Then the compressor malfunctioned.
After fermenting at ambient temperature, the beer developed into something we hadn’t expected: a hazy, easy-drinking pale ale that survived its rocky beginning and earned itself a place on the taps.
At 4.7% ABV, it’s sessionable, approachable and completely unique.
We couldn’t have planned it.
And that’s kind of the point.

Ella hops bring a distinctly Australian element to a beer that already has quite a story behind it.

Galaxy joins Ella to give False Start a Southern Hemisphere hop character and another connection to our Aussie roots.
One Accidental Fermentation
A compressor malfunction meant this batch fermented at ambient temperature — creating a beer we never intended to brew quite this way.
And may never be able to brew quite this way again.
False Start’s Kind of Pint
There’s probably some wisdom in having a plan.
There’s also something to be said for knowing when to throw the plan out the window.
False Start is what happens when brewing doesn’t go exactly as expected, the beer refuses to cooperate with the original plan — and somehow everything works out anyway.
It wasn’t the beer we planned.
It was the beer we got.
And we’re pretty happy we did.
Why a Wombat?
A wisdom is a creative collective noun used to describe a group of wombats.
While these Australian marsupials are usually seen on their own, when they do gather, their group can be called a wisdom.
With our Australian roots and a brewery named Wisdom, the wombats quickly became part of the story.
False Start proves that sometimes wisdom isn’t about everything going according to plan.
Sometimes it’s knowing what to do when it doesn’t.
